What Is a Metaverse?

Have you heard of the metaverse? This buzzword has been making waves in the world of technology and has been the subject of many conversations recently. But what exactly is the metaverse? In this blog post, we will explore the concept of the metaverse and its potential to revolutionize the way we interact with digital content.

The metaverse is a term used to describe a virtual world that is not limited to a single platform or device. It can be anything from an immersive digital ecosystem to digital content overlaid onto the physical world or a complete virtual world. The possibilities are endless, and the hype surrounding metaverse activities is only growing stronger. Let's explore the possibilities with Rob Petrosino, Head of Custom & Emerging Technology.

Key Components of a Metaverse

There are different types of metaverses that exist, including immersive, Ready Player One-style metaverses, and blended ones that incorporate the real world. The structure and infrastructure required for metaverses are essential, with digital twins and spatial computing being key components.

Building a metaverse is a technical challenge, with factors such as whether it is persistent or decentralized and how it is deployed coming into play. Transport, transform, and transact are three vital aspects of a metaverse, with transaction being essential for users to interact with the space.

Transactions are also crucial for the long-term sustainment of any metaverse, particularly in the Creator economy. In web 3, users own their data, and external repositories of decentralized servers and networks store the data instead of within the system. This enables users to choose what data is accessed by websites, and if full access is given, they can be compensated or transacted with that data. The shift from centralized data in web 2 to decentralized data in web 3 enables users to monetize their information and content creation.

What Is A True Metaverse?

There are many different metaverse experiences, including smart manufacturing, virtual healthcare, education, and digital concerts. Understanding both centralized and decentralized metaverse experiences is essential, and the development of a decentralized metaverse that adheres to web3 principles is critical for the long run.

The downfall of the monolithic metaverse, a web 2.0 experience on a centralized system with avatars, is that it disengages from the key aspects of Web3 and metaverse technology. A true metaverse should be decentralized and allow users to own and share their data and information across various platforms.

Most recently, we saw the launch of the World Economic Forum’s Metaverse. Their technology stack disregarded many of the decentralized aspects of a true “metaverse.” Built specifically for interacting in a virtual environment the WEF launched a Microsoft based system that lacked any interoperability with other systems.

What Do We Believe?

At PeakActivity, we believe that the adoption of a decentralized network will increase as users own their information, particularly from the next digital generation. We encourage listeners to follow us on social media for more discussions on technology and the future.
